Cheese tasting, just these words evoke a world of pleasure right to your table. The aroma of Pecorino, the sheep milk’s cheese made in the area, pervades the streets and alleys of the Renaissance town of Pienza . Therefore, it is possible to taste different types in one of the many local shops or at one of the farms nearby. A visit to a farm is a must if you have children as they will love seeing the animals and experimenting rural life. During the cheese tour, we will discover how the cheese is made, its nutritional value, debunking false myths about fat content, cholesterol, osteoporosis and lactose intolerance.
We will learn the history of cheese making in Italy and Tuscany and also how the sharecropping system has changed the life of the residents and the landscape altogether. The Val d’Orcia valley retains its beauty also thanks to the shepherds and their sheep that gently graze on the rolling hills of this area.
Alternatively, if you are staying in a villa, we can do a cheese tasting at your place just before your dinner, after your day out touring. This is roughly a 1,5 hour long experience, where we will combine three different cheeses with three different wines. You will understand how to appreciate each cheese and wine and why they go together. We will also show you the basics of pairing food and wine. This is a very fun and informative experience that you will be able to replicate at home with your friends.
