Chigiana International Festival & Summer Academy 2019

The Maggio inaugurates the International Summer Festival of the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. Fabio Luisi, with Lilya Zilberstein as soloist, will conduct the piano concert of the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino at the opening of the Chigiana International Festival & Summer Academy 2019, Saturday, July 6 at the Teatro dei Rinnovati in Siena.

The programme of this exceptional event presents two of the most beloved works by the international public: the Concerto for piano and orchestra in B flat minor, n.1 by Piötr Illič Čiaikovkij, to which the great Russian pianist will give his unmistakable mark and the Sixth Symphony in F major, op. 68, Pastorale by Ludwig van Beethoven.

The Concerto, which inaugurates the fifth edition of the event established by the Accademia Chigiana in 2015, marks a double debut: Fabio Luisi at the Accademia Chigiana and the Russian pianist with the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. At the same time, it is also a great return of the prestigious symphony team in the summer festival of Chigiana, after sixteen years of absence, his last appearance dates back to July 12, 2003, under the baton of Zubin Mehta, then Music Director of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, a former student of the Accademia Chigiana among the most famous.

The Vice-President of the Region of Tuscany, Monica Barni, declared: “I am truly satisfied that the regional policies aimed at defining and promoting the “Musical System of Tuscany” – an action of coordination and design collaboration between the most significant institutions of our territory, supported by the Region of Tuscany – has encouraged this important meeting between the Accademia Chigiana, excellence in the field of higher education and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. This meeting, which is renewed after more than 16 years since the last concert in May in Siena, is the starting point for a long lasting organic and project collaboration that will certainly bring important elements of growth for both institutions and a valuable opportunity for quality for the public, everything, citizens, operators, fans of the cultural offer of our region. My best wishes for the success of the initiative”.

“With the opening concert of the Chigiana International Festival 2019, says the President of the Accademia Chigiana Carlo Rossi, the Accademia Chigiana and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino resume a dialogue that has been interrupted for too long. The collaboration between these two historical, important musical institutions of our country is a determining factor of cultural development and enhancement of our best excellence. The new course of Chigiana has now become the engine of an integrated system, where the main resources of the territory converge, which contribute to making the Academy a unique institution in the world, where the training expressed at the highest level is transformed into activities of great entertainment, as well as opportunities to start a career for the best young talents from around the world. La Chigiana and Maggio both look to the youth context, well aware that only through the active involvement of the new generations and the transmission to them of our cultural identity will be possible to ensure continuity of existence to a heritage of knowledge and culture of inestimable value. Our hope is that this concert will be the starting point of a new path that sees Chigiana and Maggio united by a project intent that is not limited only to the creation of great moments of entertainment, but that can give life to new territorial dynamics, aimed at the development of increasingly integrated activities.

The return of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino to the Accademia Chigiana in Siena – continues Cristiano Chiarot, Superintendent of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino – marks the resumption of a collaboration that has produced in the past, and – I am sure – in the future, results of great artistic importance, as can be expected from realities historically protagonists of the cultural and musical life of Tuscany and Italy.
